As a little break from Christopher Forgues-related material, I'm reposting this set of songs which was performed live by Kria Brekkan on East Village Radio 4/26/2008. This recording seems to be surprisingly illusive, which is why I'm (re)posting it here. All three songs are unreleased as of yet, my favorite of which being Forest aka "Ravine", which is essentially a reworked, extended version of "Solush" (from Apotropaiosong Armor). My good friends in the b3nson collective, (a collective in which I am also a member) Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, are planning a tour as a lead-in to the South By Southwest Festival held in Austin, Texas. They're broke as hell and their van is in dire need of repairs. I urge you to check them out and GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY (only if you like them, I guess). Cool prizes and thingamajigs are offered for your enjoyment & adoration and vary with each monetary value of pledging. "What do they sound like?" you may ask. Well, they're a band of eight folky tunesters, whaling on guitars & drums, hammering out harmonies, haunting you at night with a whorring saw, horns blazing, accordian rolling out hot licks, lalala. Some compare them to Neutral Milk Hotel, but that's a bit too broad methinks. It's tough to say really. Other people say they're gypsies, but I don't think they'll put a curse on you. They may enchant you with their hypnotic melodies and sly charm though. See for yourselves.

It's going to be about an anchorite dude-bro who turns into a house cat at night and murders people. I'll probably tie in some weird magic ritual stuff along with cat gods, etc. so anyone who has read The Cities of The Red Night trilogy by Burroughs will know I'm "biting his style" a bit, as they say.

Smooth, more often than not undistorted guitars muttering quietly back & forth, conversing in a trio along with a bass & a blended low layer of sparsely placed words. I was always more into later releases by this band until two days ago, when I really listened to this album and was completely blown away. The stand-out track is definitely "Bedside Table", which starts off slow and builds to an intensely intimidating explosion of ecstatic bliss (as do most of their songs). This is rock music.

This came out in 1994 on Mason Ring records, straight outta the 315; Syracuse, NY. Raw female-fronted rock that possesses something I can't quite describe. I can find nothing about this band (or the label) and would like to know more. Let me know if you have any info!

Amazingly, this comes with a note that identifies the record as a chain letter and urges you to buy as many copies as possible. An excerpt:

"John", a college student in Syracuse, NY, broke the chain: over Christmas his pipes burst, drowned his dog, and ruined his entire colection of Phish bootlegs.

This 7" was originally released in 1995 on Independent Project Records. Heavy, intensely melodic riffs that rest on the edge of shoegaze, accompanied by serene & soothing female vocals. This is a record I can listen to any time, regardless of mood, over and over again. A true classic.

I know basically nothing about this band other than it seems like they may be reuniting in some way and unearthing some older material for digital release. Henry's Dress was a raw & raucous band who made short, pop-driven songs about adolescent romance (or the lack thereof) and emitted a burgeoning, flexing sound, sometimes undescriptively referred to as being of the "garage" genre. Low fuzzy basslines, ultra-treble distorted guitar chords, and everything drenched in feedback, with flowing waves of almost undiscernable, beautifully melodic vocals (sometimes girl, sometimes boy), they made some of the greatest music I have ever heard. A lot, I know. Coming up: one more oldie on a wrinkled page, unfinished, and one completed last week in DARK marker.

Most of these are from the end of last winter/spring when I decided to use actually use the gutted, sparsely paged sketchbook. I haven't drawn "for real" in quite some time, but I'd like to start going more in the realistic direction, whatever that means.

Upon the completion of the latest, I was told that all my drawings look like smoke or water, which I thought was interesting. What do you think?

Released in 1997 (maybe '96?) by Blackbean & Placenta Tape Club. I found this on ebay while looking at a bunch of BB&P stuff and decided to drop $3 (total) on it. I'm glad I did!

Awesome & fun shoegazey rock w/ some heavy organ and intense pop hooks going on. Fans of the rarely used lock groove (props!). They were also Albany, NY natives!! They've got a similar sound to the Swirlies combined with subtle hints of Rockets & Bluelights (At least in my mind. Maybe I'm making that up since they too were from Albany? More on them later...)

I've got a 7" and a cd (plus one comp. song) by them that I will upload in the near future, but if anyone has any info on this band or can hook me up with their other 7" (on Rotary 10 Records), I would be ecstatic!

* Note: I'm pretty fucking pissed because I just had to re-write this whole post after firefox crashed. My computer is slowly bleeding to death 'n' the hard drive brain is burning out. My fault, but DAMN!

YESTERDAY - I took a walk at around 4am after listening to Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind in it's entirety. (Note there are two discs.)

[SWANS]

I dropped 2/3 of my netflix in the mailbox a few blocks from my houses and decided to explore the plaza a bit. At four am, walking down my st, the lighting is pretty surreal. Towards the end of the st. there's a parking lot for an apt. building receding back from the sidewlk w/ bright suburb porch lights high on sticks, floating above the pointed wooden fence boards. Left, higher & surrounding is the sky, starting to get lighter, a faded navy/slight cerulean blue that's pretty sharp. And in front of me, I'm walking towards the plaza w/ yellowrange bug bulb spot lights shining up at the bldg's marbled columns. The lighting is almost as bright as daylight sun, shining up fr the ground coming through trees at me. Very strange combination of the three (not big bro. & the holding co.). I can't really describe.

Continuing up & forward I embarked upon exploring the plaza through a gated entranceway rarely used. It's strange to be in such a huge man-made structure like that alone when it's comptetly deserted 'n dark. Walking alongside high ledges next to which, on the other side, were large green bushes covered in varying darknesses, I thought to myself "Man, if I were a homeless person, I would totally sleep here." (Funny I should think that, because...) I came to some steps and went down them, into a park area. I realized this was the place I had encountered almost four years ago and though not actively looking too hard for it on a seldom if ever basis since, had never found it again. It houses an odd pool w/ weird concrete shapes coming out of the sides, poking passively, & I think its a Vietnam Veteran's memorial. It's a krazy rectangular themd shape, jutting and whatnot w/ a set of steps that lead down into a pool. I've never seen this fountain working, spilling out water, but I did hear a steady stream or urine-esque water dripping fr. where the gushing flood should come. I marveled at it for a minute, then left. The water inside's stagnant, but must have chlorine in it cuz there wasn't any algae.

After turning around and walking a few steps in some way, I stopped ded when I say a homeless dude sleeping sitting up on a bench, head slumped forwrd slightlee, ten ft. in front. It completely scared the shit out of me, surprising my casualness fr walking parks after dark in a wild city. I walked back furtively in the direction from which I came. Luckily, I tread lightly w/ quiet steps.

I got home at 4:30ish, watched Jeopardy (x2) and made french fires or fries, rather, before going to bed at 5:30. Pretty uneventful.

Swirlies - "Wet Naps". I want to play this song on my radio show, but probably won't since I'll have to beep out too much (because the FCC EATS SHIT!!! Yea, what now muthafukkaz?! Fuck yo' rules 'n' regulations!) Anyway, here it is in all it's swirling gloriousness. The whole of Sneaky Flutes and Sneaky Flue Music is alarmingly good, as all the Sneaky Fluters out there aldrdy know. Get yr. hed in the game 'n' check this track out to see what I'm talking about.

I'm going to be posting more stuff in great volumes very shortly. I just got a mediafire accnt, so if any of the mp3s on here go out, let me know 'n' I'll repost 'em on there. A lot of rips (first will be Swirlies' classic WHAT TO DO ABOUT THEM), drawings, etc. to come. Stay n00d.

Almost a year ago, I interviewed Phil Elverum via e-mail for a zine that I still have not put out yet (oof). I have mixed feelings about this interview/am mostly not pleased with it. Anyway, here it is:

How long have you been making music?

Since about 1993

What got you interested in creating your own music, or when exactly did you decide you were going to do The Microphones and why?

I started playing drums in a band when I was like 15. I started making my own tapes of recording experiments when I was 16 or 17 and started calling those tapes "The Microphones" when I was 17, I think. I don't really remember. There is no reason why. Just because.

Is there one group or performer you can specify as your biggest influence?

Probably overall the biggest influence has been Eric's Trip and that group of people, but it has been years since I've been really inspired by them. There are so many weird sounds.

Who or what would you say your influences are on a day to day basis? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I am compelled to keep working on all the millions of projects I create for myself. I don't know about influences. It all just comes out of me. I am productive. I feel like a rotting slug if I'm not producing something.

How do you feel about playing shows? Would you be content recording an album without having to attempt to recreate the songs live?

I never attempt to recreate the songs live. It's basically like 2 different bands. One is me sitting there singing and the other one is weird records.

Do you find that older songs are harder to play or have become slightly painful/embarrassing/less enjoyable to perform since you are not the same person you were when you wrote them?

Yes.

How would you describe the difference (if there is any) between The Microphones and Mt. Eerie?

There isn't any, besides just a chronological difference. I am a different person than 1999 Phil or 2001 Phil.

What is Mount Eerie to you right now?

It is always the same thing to me: a dark costume I get into to sing about weird unknown things.

How do you typically go about the writing/recording process?

It just happens. Songs come into my head. I think about them. I record sounds and listen to them and add and subtract and make a weird sound sculpture until it sounds like I want it to.

What makes you stick to recording analog and why do you think it's important?

I like it because it is flawed in beautiful ways. Also, these are the tools that I have. I do not think it's important. It is just tools. The result is the important thing.

I know "Black Wooden Ceiling Opening" just came out (Excellent by the way.) Is there anything else in the works?

I have so many things coming out. Too many to list here. They are listed on my website under "Upcoming" on the front page. [Note: Phil's website is located here.]

What is the meaning behind "Where Lies My Tarp?" (I'm just curious because my friends and I especially like this song.)

It's me being romantic like Peewee in Pee Wee's Big Adventure when he says "I'm a loner Dotty, a rebel." It's about wanting to go out alone instead of cuddle with a soft person.

Do you ever think you'd write the score for a film or work on the soundtrack?

Yes. I have done that. I'll do it more in the future.

It has been various things. At the moment it is not a symbol I'm thinking about lately.

I try not to think about how the songs will be taken. It is just disorienting.
